Since their introduction in 1903, Crayola Crayons have
become a fixture in classrooms and children’s homes. Now, Madacy
Kids (ToyDirectory),
a division of Madacy Entertainment Group, and Crayola,
have teamed up to create a new crayon set combining music and art for kids
ages 2 to 6.
The Crayola Music Box includes 50 songs on 2 CDs, a
50-page coloring book and an 8-pack of crayons celebrating Crayola’s 100th
anniversary. The CDs feature children’s classic tunes adapted for this
generation’s kids, such as a calypso rendition of “Baa-Baa Black Sheep,”
and some new songs like “Color Your World Crayola.” Winner of a Dr. Toy
award for “Best Vacation Toy” of 2003, each package retails for $9.98.
Sandy Gardner, vice president of marketing for Madacy Kids, believes
the Crayola Music Box is a great way to promote Crayola as a lifestyle
brand as well as an art product.

“Part of Madacy’s focus has been brand marketing, and everyone knows
that Crayola has appealed to [many] generations,” said Gardner. “This
is the first release among many titles that will be coming out, and we’re
hoping to provide a way to encourage kids and parents to try to sing together
and have fun.”
Each page in the coloring book features a picture that corresponds to
a song. Upcoming CD titles include Animal Songs, Silly Songs,
Storybook Favorites and Toddler Songs. CDs retail at
$5.98 U.S.
“Adults will definitely recognize and remember the songs,” said Gardner.
“We’ve also added new lyrics … Since some of [the songs] were written
in the early 19th century, we’ve added endings that are politically correct
and child-friendly.”
