Best Toys for Babies 0-6 Months 2026: 7 Simple Picks for Looking, Grasping and Tummy Time

In the first six months, a baby's best toy is you: your face, your voice and your hands. The toys that help most at this age are simple ones you use together during awake time on the floor, things to look at, hold, shake, mouth and reach for. These seven picks, from $4.73 to $34.99, cover rattles, a crinkle toy, a floor mirror, a play gym and a chew-safe book. Each one is tied to a milestone or play tip from the CDC, and every listing grades it for babies (from birth or from 3 months) and shows no small-parts warning.

Safe sleep comes first: none of these toys goes in the crib. The CDC's tip for 2-month-olds says that if your baby seems sleepy, place him "on his back in a safe sleep area (firm mattress with no blankets, pillows, bumper pads, or toys)." The American Academy of Pediatrics puts it this way: "Use a fitted sheet only—nothing else should be in the crib with your baby." Sources: CDC, Milestones by 2 Months and HealthyChildren.org (AAP), How to Keep Your Sleeping Baby Safe.

What most babies are learning to do, birth to 6 months

The CDC lists milestones that most babies (75% or more) reach by a certain age. By 2 months, most babies look at your face, smile when you talk to or smile at them, look at a toy for several seconds and hold their head up when on their tummy. By 4 months, most hold a toy when you put it in their hand, use an arm to swing at toys, bring their hands to their mouth and push up onto elbows or forearms on their tummy. By 6 months, most like to look at themselves in a mirror, put things in their mouth to explore them, reach to grab a toy they want, laugh and take turns making sounds with you.

The CDC's play tips for these months are mostly free. Talk, read and sing to your baby. Copy your baby's sounds and see how long your baby "talks" back and forth with you. Play peek-a-boo. At 2 months, hold a rattle off to one side of your baby's head, shake it, and see if your baby looks for the noise, and place a baby-safe mirror nearby. At 4 months, give your baby safe toys that are easy to hold, like rattles or cloth books with colorful pictures, and remember that playing on the floor or play mat every day helps your baby move, learn and explore. At 6 months, put toys just out of reach so your baby rolls to get them, and when your baby drops a toy, pick it up and give it back. The CDC also says screen time is not recommended for children younger than 2, apart from video calls with loved ones.

How we picked

An American Academy of Pediatrics clinical report on choosing toys says toys do the most good when they get caregivers and children playing together, in play that is rich in language, pretending, problem-solving and creativity. For babies under 6 months that means toys you can hold up, shake, hand over and talk about. We chose screen-free picks that match the CDC's milestones and tips for these months, with no batteries, no magnets and no small parts. We opened each Amazon listing on the morning of Oct. 29, 2026, to check the age grade, the price, the stock and any safety warning, and we searched CPSC recall data for each brand and product; none of these products matched a recall. None of these products has been featured in our earlier age guides.

A safety note before you shop: babies explore with their mouths, so the CDC's 4-month tip says to offer things that are "not sharp, hot, or small enough to choke on." The AAP's toy-buying tips start with "Read the label" and "Think LARGE": make sure all toys and parts are larger than your child's mouth. The same tips say soft objects and anything that could raise the risk of suffocation or strangulation should be kept out of the crib. Wash toys that go in the mouth, check them for wear before each use, and keep older siblings' toys with small parts out of reach. Play time is awake, supervised time.

Birth to 3 months: looking and listening

1. Bright Starts Oball Easy-Grasp Rattle (newborn and up)

Bright Starts Oball Easy-Grasp Rattle in teal

The Oball rattle is a lightweight 4-inch ball with what the listing calls an easy-grasp design, made for little hands to hold. Early on, it is the rattle you shake beside your baby's head for the CDC's look-for-the-noise game. A few months later, it is the toy your baby holds, shakes and drops for you to hand back. The listing shows about 4.9 stars from about 10,100 ratings.

Age and safety: the title reads "Age Newborn and up", and the listing's age range is "Baby". BPA-free, per the title. No warning text was shown on the listing. No batteries or magnets.

Price: $5.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Oct 29)

Pros:

  • The cheapest toy here, and easy for small hands to grip
  • Useful from the first weeks through the drop-and-give-back stage
  • Very highly rated, with more than 10,000 ratings

Cons:

  • Very simple, so it works best as one of a few toys

2. Sassy My First Rattles Newborn Gift Set, 3 rattles (ages 0+ months)

Sassy My First Rattles set of three soft rattles

Three soft, flexible rattles in contrasting colors, each with a textured handle the listing describes as easy to grasp and good for mouthing. Rotating three rattles keeps the CDC's 2-month rattle game fresh, and by 4 months, when most babies hold a toy you put in their hand, they are easy to pass back and forth. The listing shows about 4.8 stars from about 1,450 ratings.

Age and safety: the title reads "Ages 0+ Months", and the listing's age range is "Baby". No warning text was shown on the listing. No batteries or magnets.

Price: $12.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Oct 29)

Pros:

  • Three rattles in one gift box, a good shower or first-Christmas gift
  • Soft, squishy and flexible, per the listing

Cons:

  • Soft surfaces need regular washing once baby starts mouthing

3. Lamaze Freddie the Firefly Clip-On Toy (ages 0 to 2 years)

Lamaze Freddie the Firefly clip-on crinkle toy

Freddie is a soft firefly with crinkly wings, mixed textures, a small attached mirror and a tethered star for chewing, per the listing. It clips to a stroller, car seat or diaper bag, so it is the toy that comes along on walks and errands, where you can name the colors and let your baby squeeze the crinkly wings. The listing shows about 4.8 stars from about 22,350 ratings, the most of any pick here.

Age and safety: manufacturer's recommended age 0 to 2 years. No warning text was shown on the listing. The clip is for strollers, car seats and bags; never attach it to a crib or leave it with a sleeping baby.

Price: $14.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Oct 29)

Pros:

  • Lots to touch and look at in one toy: crinkle, textures and a mirror
  • The clip makes it a reliable travel toy
  • Long age range, from birth to 2 years

Cons:

  • Fabric toy that needs washing after drool-heavy weeks

3 to 6 months: tummy time, swatting and reaching

4. Bright Starts Sit and See Safari Floor Mirror (ages 0 to 1 year)

Bright Starts Sit and See Safari floor mirror

A large baby mirror that stands on the floor, with crinkly leaves and colorful fabric around it, and it folds flat for storage. The CDC suggests placing a baby-safe mirror near your baby at 2 months and, during awake tummy time, putting toys at eye level in front of your baby to help them practise lifting their head. By 6 months, most babies like to look at themselves in a mirror. The listing shows about 4.6 stars from about 10,100 ratings.

Age and safety: manufacturer's recommended age 0 to 1 year; the title says "Ages Newborn +". No warning text was shown on the listing, and it needs no batteries. Tummy time is always supervised; the CDC's tip is "Do not leave your baby alone."

Price: $11.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Oct 29)

Pros:

  • Gives your baby something to look at during tummy time
  • Works for sit-and-play later, and folds flat

Cons:

  • Age grade ends at 1 year, so its useful life is short
  • Does one job; a play gym (pick 6) adds a mirror plus hanging toys

5. Sassy Crinkle Ball (3+ months)

Sassy Crinkle Ball with rainbow fabric panels

A light, 6-inch fabric ball with crinkle inside each rainbow panel and black-and-white ribbons, per the listing. It is big enough to bat at when most babies start swinging at toys (around 4 months) and easy to grab when they start reaching for toys they want (around 6 months). Put it just out of reach on the play mat, as the CDC suggests for 6-month-olds, and cheer the roll. The listing shows about 4.8 stars from about 480 ratings.

Age and safety: the title reads "3+ Months" (the listing has no separate age field). No warning text was shown on the listing. No batteries or magnets. It comes with a textured link for on-the-go use, per the listing.

Price: $10.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Oct 29; the page showed "Only 3 left in stock")

Pros:

  • Big, light and easy to grab for reaching practice
  • Crinkle sound rewards every squeeze

Cons:

  • Low stock when we checked
  • Age grade appears in the title only

6. Bright Starts Treetop Bloom Activity Gym and Tummy Time Mat (ages 0 to 3 years)

Bright Starts Treetop Bloom activity gym and play mat

The big-box gift on this list: a washable play mat with a removable toy bar, a bead chaser, a textured leaf, a crinkle disc and a prop-up mirror with high-contrast flash cards, per the listing. It covers tummy time, lie-and-swat and sit-and-play. The CDC says playing on the floor or a play mat with your baby every day helps him move, learn and explore, and a mat gives that floor time a clean, defined spot.

Age and safety: manufacturer's recommended age 0 to 3 years; the title says "Ages Newborn & Up". No warning text was shown on the listing. A play gym is for awake, supervised play only, never for sleep.

Price: $34.99 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Oct 29; the page showed "Only 14 left in stock")

Pros:

  • Mat, toy bar, toys and mirror in one gift
  • Machine-washable mat; the toy bar comes off and the mat folds for storage

Cons:

  • A new model with only 5 ratings on the listing
  • Low stock when we checked

7. Indestructibles: Let's Go Outside! (reading age baby to 2 years)

Indestructibles Let's Go Outside baby book

A first book made to be chewed: the publisher's description calls it rip proof and waterproof, made of a tight-woven material that can be drooled on and washed, with bright pictures and very few words. That makes it easy to follow the CDC's tips to talk, read and sing to your baby and, at 6 months, to "read" by looking at colorful pictures and talking about them. The listing shows about 4.8 stars from about 2,750 ratings.

Age and safety: the listing gives a reading age of baby to 2 years. No warning text was shown on the listing. Read together during awake time; like every toy here, it stays out of the crib.

Price: $4.73 on Amazon (Amazon price checked Oct 29)

Pros:

  • Built for the way babies explore books: hands and mouth
  • Under $5, so it pairs well with any other pick

Cons:

  • Very few words, so you supply the story

Free ideas that work just as well

You do not need to buy anything to follow the CDC's tips for these months. Narrate what you are doing while you change, feed and bathe your baby. When your baby coos, coo back and wait for a reply. Hold a set of keys or a homemade shaker to one side and see if your baby turns toward the sound. Play peek-a-boo with your hands. Look at family photos or a colorful magazine together and name what you see. Lay your baby on a blanket on the floor for awake tummy time with you face to face.

If you have questions about development

Every baby grows at their own pace. If your baby is not meeting one or more milestones, has lost skills they once had, or you have other concerns, talk to your pediatrician. The CDC also lists each state's early intervention contacts at cdc.gov/FindEI. Questions about your baby's sleep space belong with your pediatrician, too.
