Holsteins are immediately recognizable by their black and white coloring — the stereotypical farm bull and cow. Today farmers raise Holsteins for their amazing milk-producing ability: The average cow produces 3,250 gallons of milk a year. Grazing quietly on grasses and woody plants, impala are active throughout the day and night. These small, reddish antelope alternate between resting and grazing and sipping cool water. Billies usually have longer horns and beards than the females, called nannies. Lions roam the African savannah in families called prides that are made up of related females, their children and a single male. Together they can overpower large prey like zebras, buffalo, giraffes, hippopotamuses and even young elephants, but they’re not above scavenging other animals’ leftovers. Dromedary camels have been domesticated for so long that we may never know how wide their original habitats were. Camels’ bodies are perfect for long desert travel: their broad feet make walking on sand easier; their long eyelashes protect their eyes from sand; and their nostrils close to keep sand out. The hump on their backs is actually deposits of fat—stored energy for when the next oasis is miles away. Camels can survive without water for really long periods of time and can lose over forty percent of their body weight in water. (Most animals can only safely lose twenty percent.) Swinging their noses from side to side when they smell an ant or termite nest underground, aardvarks dig furiously into even the hardest-baked soil to find their supper. They can eat as many as 50,000 insects in one night and can walk up to six miles searching for food. They eat really fast but walk relatively slowly—unless they feel threatened. Then they speed away surprisingly quickly. While aardvarks may not see very well, they have an excellent sense of hearing. Muntjacs are one of the oldest known species of deer. Also called Barking Deer because of their peculiar barking that can go on for hours and hours, muntjacs live in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Giant Muntjacs, about the size of a large dog, were only discovered in northern Vietnam in 1994, but have since been spotted numerous times in the mountains between Laos and Vietnam. Llamas are kept primarily as pets, guard animals, and pack animals used for trekking expeditions in mountainous areas. They are related to dromedary camels from Arabia. Llamas have luxurious coats with fine, dense wool that help them strut in the cold mountains. Lucas and Lisa stand 3.1” and 2.5” tall, respectively — and like all of the Noah’s Pals they are sculpted to a 1:24 scale. Asiatic black bears are omnivores, which means they’ll eat just about anything – fruit, berries, grasses, seeds, nuts, invertebrates, honey, fish, birds – and even bamboo, just like pandas! They’re close relatives of the American black bear except they have wider and larger ears. Also called “Moon Bears,” Asiatic black bears have a distinctive "V" marking on their chests. Ostriches are the largest living species of bird. Although they can’t fly, they have very good vision and hearing, which means they can sense predators like lions from a great distance and quickly speed away. Red kangaroos live in the arid plains of central Australia and are the largest surviving marsupials anywhere in the world – they can grower taller than a full-grown man!
