According to a report "What to Watch in 2004" by the NPD Group, “another area of strength in 2003 that will continue this year is the mini doll category.” There is no question that mini’s are taking over the shelves this season. Generally, these dolls fall somewhere between ages 3-7. The range is so broad that they are capable of aiming slightly below a tween audience or toward a more innocent shopper.

Traditionally, mini dolls like Polly Pocket and Disney Mini Princess were designed for younger girls. This season’s retro fever brings kids flashbacks like Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony.

“ Mini dolls and accessories drove doll growth thanks in large part to the revival of classic properties such as Strawberry Shortcake (Bandai) and My Little Pony (Hasbro), with Strawberry Shortcake making a comeback almost 20 years after its initial retail release,” stated a recent NPD press release. Original characters and online storylines are stylish for the older girls and most of them emulate high school with topics like cars and prom. New lines like T*Neez, Secret Central, Shorties, and Cliq are marketing for an already profitable segment. These dolls are all so cute they will have girls saying, “I want my mini!”
