What’s Selling Now!

Consumers Go Bananas as Holiday Sales Rev Up

By Sivhour Sim
December 2007

With additional research by Virginia Davis, Terri Hughes-Lazzell, Christine Lebednik and Brenda Ruggiero.

Dec. 13, 2007 – With the holiday season in full swing, TDmonthly Magazine spoke with 29 specialty retailers to find out the latest in sales news. Many admitted that they are facing a problem — not being able to keep products in stock!

Almost 20 percent of the retailers singled out Bananagrams by Bananagrams as their hottest selling item.

“We can’t keep that game in stock,” said Steve, owner of My Storyhouse Toys in Roswell, Ga.

“People keep asking for it,” echoed Denise, owner of The Toy Store in Atlanta.

Another 20 percent of retailers named Webkinz by Ganz as a hot seller. However, unlike Bananagrams, sales of Webkinz are both exceptionally strong and exceptionally weak. Some retailers said the toys are practically jumping off shelves — the owner of Treasure Hunt Toys in Bristol, Va., told TDmonthly the store sells “at least 10 Webkinz every day” — but others are witnessing a different phenomenon: “They have almost quit selling completely,” Owner Joyce Matthews of Just 4 Fun in St. Simon’s Island, Ga., told TDmonthly.

Also controversial is Rubik’s Revolution by Techno Source. Mary Walsh, owner of Magical Child in Greenfield, Mass., told TDmonthly the product is “selling like an impulse item,” but Owner Terri Bracken of Earth Explorer Toys in Zionsville, Ind., said, “It’s just not doing well.” Two stores expressed disappointment in Kidsgive’s Karito Kids, which they said just aren’t selling.

Rounding out the family of hot-selling items are playsets by Kid Galaxy Bumper Cars, the old Rubik's Cube, Playmobil, Plasma Cars by Plasmart, Calico Critters by International Playthings, games by Educational Insights and others.

With the addition of fog or smoke, the laser beam becomes visible for more high-tech excitement. Khet (formerly known as Deflexion) caused a stir in 2006 at Toy Fair and Pomona. “The game truly spans the generation gap, with enough technology to interest the 'video-gamers' of the younger crowd while maintaining enough classic strategy ... to interest their grandparents and everyone in between,” Luke Hooper of Innovention Toys told TDmonthly.   It received a 2006 MENSA Select Award and was a 2007 T.O.T.Y. Game-of-the-Year Nominee. Launch date: 2006. Read Review
