Plush pets in purses continue to dangle from young fashionistas' arms while shopping for other animal companions, retailers told TDmonthly Magazine. Old and young alike have been reaching for penguins these days in addition to the old standbys — cats, dogs, bears and horses, manufacturers agreed. But that doesn't mean that twisted minds need give up plush doll designing: Uglydolls and Manhattan Toy’s (ToyDirectory) Petrageous line are both holding their own.

“Typical and unique is what everyone wants,” summarized Sue Wrzesinski, owner of the Toy House and Baby Too in Jackson, Mich.
