Presented here in the full military dress of an officer in the army, this is how Lewis would have appeared as he left St. Louis in 1804. Lewis wore his uniform while conducting official business until it wore out or was traded. He carried a pike as a symbol of military office in addition to his knife, sword, pistol, and rifle. The uniform was important; Lewis was the first American diplomatic representative to the New West.
