Kids'
cars:
By Tim Sullivan
I remember going to my corner store and staring through the plexi-glass
display at all of the new Matchbox cars in awe. While my fixation
rested pretty much solely on Matchbox, it seems to me now that I was
missing out on quite a bit. Take a look at these great offerings in
the realm of children’s non-powered cars:
Speed Racer Grand Prix Challenge
Speed
Racer Toy |
One of my favorite toys
as a child was my racing track set. I had a box full of plastic
connecting tracks, that I could take out and use to build any kind
of racetrack I wanted. The Speed Racer Grand Prix Challenge from
Darda is just like that. While it includes a plan for a track, and a
cool one at that (with many loops,) you do not have to follow the
strict instructions. Also included in the box is the famous Mach 5
(Speed Racer’s car) and the car of Racer X, his nemesis. With the
Speed Racer license attached, this package will attract both kids
and collectors.
BRIO Dump Truck |
BRIO Dump Truck
New from this popular creator of toys for
children is the Brio Dump Truck. In bright yellow and black, this
truck is perfect for construction minded tots. The cargo bed moves
up and down for easy filling and dumping, thus fulfilling all the
requirements of a dump truck. Made of plastic, the Brio truck can be
played with both indoors and out.
Hometown Roadway
Hometown Roadway |
Hometown Roadway, from
Racing Champions Ertl, is a wooden road system for children. The
Hometown Roadway includes accessories like buildings and cars that
children can play with and use to create their own miniature towns.
What separates the Hometown Roadway from other wooden road systems
can be summed up in one word: licenses. Ertl has acquired the
licenses to many popular roadside attractions that children will
readily identify with. Kids can now drive their Chrysler PT Cruiser
or Chevy Trailblazer up to a Texaco Station or McDonalds. While this
type of corporate branding scared me at first, I am a fan of the Pez
Factory they included. So, I guess my anti-branding stance is
biased. In any case, the Hometown Roadway is built very well…I
certainly would have loved it as a child. I probably would have
loved the idea of my own McDonald’s too.
